Staying Confident Through Change: Navigating Career Transitions

Change is inevitable, but it’s never easy, especially when it involves our careers. Whether it’s a new job, a promotion, or a complete career shift, transitions can be challenging and often shake our confidence.

As someone who's recently started a new role, I can attest to the whirlwind of emotions that come with stepping outside of your comfort zone. My inner critic, or as I like to call it, my "Judge Judy," has been particularly loud lately. It’s that nagging voice reminding me of my fears and insecurities, making this transition even tougher. I don’t always get things right the first time. I’m learning what my new boss expects of me, and I’m building new relationships with people I don’t yet know. Embracing this learning curve and silencing Judge Judy is challenging, but it’s a crucial part of my growth and confidence journey.

Our brains are wired to dislike change. They thrive on consistency and familiar patterns, finding comfort in the known. When we encounter the unfamiliar, our brains can easily go into fight or flight mode, triggering anxiety and self-doubt. This is a natural response, but understanding it can help us manage it better. By recognising that this resistance to change is just our brain's way of trying to protect us, we can gently push past it and remind ourselves that growth often lies just beyond our comfort zone.

I'm lucky, I'm starting a new role within my existing business, where I already have some familiarity and support. For those transitioning into a brand-new role in a completely new company, the challenge can be even greater. Your inner critic, or "Judge Judy," can become particularly vocal, leading to heightened self-doubt and lower confidence. Research shows that we often begin with a high—the excitement and optimism of a fresh start. But soon after, we hit a real dip, confronted by the reality of how much we still have to learn and the uncomfortable feeling of being out of our depth. This is a natural part of the transition process, but it can be tough to navigate without the right mindset and tools.

Personally, stepping into my new role has been a rollercoaster of emotions. There are days when my confidence is sky-high and others when my judge is in full force, making me question my abilities. But what keeps me grounded is the reminder that this transition is just another chapter in my career journey. I’m learning, growing, and becoming better every day. By embracing the change and staying true to myself, I’m finding my footing and building my confidence, one step at a time.

“That sounds tough Jo, what tips do you have to stay confident through change?”

Acknowledge Your Feelings

First and foremost, it’s important to acknowledge how you’re feeling. It’s completely normal to feel anxious, uncertain, and even a bit scared during a transition. Don’t suppress these emotions; instead, accept them as a natural part of the process.

 Remind Yourself of Your Achievements

When self-doubt creeps in, take a moment to remind yourself of your past achievements. You've earned your kudos and stripes in your career, and this new role is just another opportunity to showcase your skills and experience. Reflecting on your accomplishments can boost your confidence and remind you of your capabilities.

 Embrace the Learning Process

Starting something new means you’re going to make mistakes and face challenges. This is part of the learning process. Allow yourself to falter a little and view each mistake as a learning opportunity rather than a setback. Embrace the journey of growth and development.

 Seek Support

Don't hesitate to seek support from your network. Whether it’s friends, family, or colleagues, having a support system can provide encouragement and reassurance during times of change. Share your experiences and lean on them when you need a confidence boost.

 Set Realistic Goals

Setting realistic and achievable goals can help you stay focused and motivated. Break down your larger objectives into smaller, manageable tasks. This approach not only makes the transition seem less daunting but also allows you to celebrate small victories along the way.

 Practice Self-Compassion

Be kind to yourself. Transition periods are tough, and it’s easy to be overly critical. Practice self-compassion by treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer a friend. Recognise that you’re doing your best and give yourself credit for your efforts.

 Visualise Success

Visualisation is a powerful tool. Take some time to visualise yourself succeeding in your new role. Imagine yourself confidently handling tasks, forming strong relationships with colleagues, and achieving your goals. This mental rehearsal can help boost your confidence and prepare you for real-life situations.

 Stay Positive and Patient

Maintaining a positive attitude can make a significant difference. Focus on the positives of your new role and the opportunities it brings. Be patient with yourself as you adjust to the new environment and responsibilities. Confidence builds over time, so give yourself the grace to grow into your new position.

Remember, staying confident through change is about embracing the journey, trusting in your abilities, and allowing yourself the grace to grow. You’ve got this!
